How to Do an Inmate Search in Indiana

Inmates belong to the property of the Department of Corrections Division when they are being held in a state jail. The general public has access to their jail database provided by the state’s Department of Corrections Division
You will be able to find the Indiana Department of Corrections offender roster on the official Indiana Department of Corrections website.

To successfully do an inmate search you will need the inmate's offender's number, inmate's first and last name.

While searching the database the CDCR number will be the fastest way to search for an inmate, which is a six-digit number. All inmates that are held in a state jail are given their own CDCR. This is done by the Indiana Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The inmate's first and last name will not be needed if you are going to enter the inmate's CDCR number. Keep in mind if there aren't any inmate's that come up after you enter the CDRC number, you will want to make sure you have entered the correct number since the number will need to be exact for the database to match an inmate.

You can always use the inmate's first and last name in the database if you aren't having any luck using the inmate's CDRC number or if you don’t have the inmate’s CDCR number available.

There will be a list of inmate's that matches the information about the inmate you entered. Inmates are all being held in this database, none of them are released if they are in this database.

The information about these inmates is listed below:

  • Inmate's Full Name
  • Facility/Location
  • Sex
  • Race
  • Date of Birth
  • Offender Number

The information listed below will be shown when you select an inmate's name:

  • Full Name
  • Offender's  Number
  • Sentence Information
  • Facility/Location
  • Sex
  • Comments
  • Date of Birth
  • Race

Who’s in Jail

Prisons operated by the state are the only prisons that will be found in the Indiana database. City and county prisons are kept in a different database.

There are 25 state prisons located in the state of Indiana. In the roster listed above is where you will be able see all of these prisons. However only state prisons are listed in this database, all other prisons will not be shown.

If you are trying to find someone in state jail, it shouldn't be that hard since the state jails are much bigger and offer much more information on their inmates than other smaller jails such as a city or county jails. You will be able to get information in a city or state jail's but you might have to jump through some hoops and you will need to know where to get the information you are looking for.

Most of the time the county's Sheriff's department manages and operates the county jails. You will need to get a hold of the county's Sheriff's department if you are searching for someone that is in the county jail.

There is barely any information on the city jails. The city jails pretty much exist to hold inmates until they will be transported to a more permanent location/jail. The city's corrections division can be contacted if the person you are looking for is being held in a city jail. The city’s official website is where you will be able to locate the contact information where you can find out the information in which you are looking for.

Jail Roster and Mugshots

The Indiana Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation had an offender database which is updated frequently. So, keep in mind that this database information changes often, even more so if the inmate is still in the process of being sentenced. The database is updated during normal business hours.

You can always call the jail that the inmate is being held in if you would like the most recent information or if you have any questions since the jail will have the most recent information.

The facility where the inmate is held in will need to be contacted if you see any information on the inmate to be wrong where information can be sorted out with the inmate.

The inmate's mugshots are kept in the database which the general public has access to. The inmates get their mugshots taken when they are being processed and booked into a state jail. Only if the inmate is being transported to a different jail, they will need to have their mugshots taken again.

The VINELink (VINE) can be used to get notified if an inmate’s moving within the system. This is where the state of California will need to be selected, then you will choose if you are looking for a defendant or an offender.

In order for you to get notified through text, calls, or email you will need to select to get notified of the inmate's profile. You will get notified right away if and when changes are made to their VINE account.
